The music video starts with a close up, of a women holding her hand over her mouth, and her eyes watering, she is obviously very emotional and is looking down all the time, the shot is in black and white, just like all of the video. She has a quick look around, and then the camera changes to a mid 2 shot, with a women lying not moving on what looks like a table or floor, the other women, is leaning over her looking at her face, the music has not begun yet and we can just her ambient sound in the background.
The camera changes to a close up of the lying down women’s face, she is not moving and keeps the same facial expression all the way through, we believe she has died or is unconscious. The camera slowly zooms out of the women’s face and starts turning blurry. The screen then goes black and the music starts.
As the music is starting the camera changes to a women lying on a bed, (looks like she is homeless) and she has a duvet or some type of blanket wrapped around her, this is a long shot, and again is in black and white. The women starts waking up and as she sits up straight, the camera swaps positions and is now behind her looking the way she is with here directly in front of the shot, this is a mid shot as it has zoomed into her.
The camera then swaps to a midshot from the front, clearly seeing her face and that her eyeliner has ran down her face, this suggests that she has been crying and fits perfectly with the black and white effect. The camera then becomes a long shot and the women is not standing up, we see she is wearing a hoodie, shorts and ripped tights, suggesting she does not have much money.
The women then walks out of shot and then, the camera changes to a midshot of her walking through trees, grabbing the branches and smiling. A quick cut swaps sides of the women as she spins round slowly and looks up into the sky. The camera then changes to a midshot of the women walking away and then the camera changes to a long shot of the women walking towards the camera up a path/ hill type area.
The camera then changes once she reaches the camera to a midshot of her chest upwards and allows us to see her smiling, the camera moves around her body as she slowly spins round too it then swaps to a close up of her face from a side view to see her smiling and looking up at the sky again.
The camera then swaps to a midshot of the women from behind, having raised here arms into the area like angel wings, this is very interesting shot as because it is in black and white we can’t see much detail and is more like an outline, with the sun acting as a halo as it is so bright, this matches the words to the song very well as it is talking about angels, this shot lasts for about 7 – 8 seconds, and is one of the longest shots in the video.
The camera then changes to a midshot, of the women’s legs and the pavement as it has moved location; she is now walking though a high street with the blanket wrapped around her body. It then swaps to a long shot, looking up at an angle to make everyone look more powerful and a halo like object is in the street above people’s heads. It then swaps to a shot looking straight up under the women’s chin, so making her look powerful, with the halo directly above her being shown.
The camera then swaps to a long shot of her walking to wads the camera from the other side of a crossing so it is very busy and people are walking all around her in both directions, the camera focuses on her all the way through the shot, it the swiftly changes to a close up of the women trying to see what looks like the big issue, suggesting even more, that she is quite poor or homeless. The camera then changes to the opposite side of her face and it has become night time and she is still there trying to sell the magazine, it is a close up of her face still and she looks tired and that she doesn’t what to be there. The camera then changes to the opposite side of the women again this time being a midshot and we see people walk past her ignoring her offers to buy the magazine.
The camera then changes to a long shot with the women sat down outside a shop, Ed Sheeran comes along, and decides to but a magazine and sits next to her to read it. It turns to a close up as Ed gives the women money, this could also be a 2 midshot as they are both in shot, but the shot is used to capture the emotion on the women’s face as she looks happier.
It then changes to a long shot again when Ed has to go and walks out of shot, this is done quickly and then swaps to a midshot of the women looking at flowers in a s tall with her blanket/duvet over her shoulder.
The shot then swaps to a close up of a sign saying “Improving the Angel, as the words “it’s too cold outside, for angels to fly” is heard in the lyrics. The camera then changes again to a close up of the women walking down another street, the women looks very sad and her eyeliner is running again, she talk to someone, but we don’t see who it is, we just see her mouth moving, t looks like they give a bad answer though as her face drops and she looks extremely upset.
The camera then changes again to the women leaning over a barrier in the street and traffic either side of her, this is from behind so we do not see her face. The woman stays there and the cars pass by her very quickly as she is not moving on the tape is sped up.
We then see the women sitting against a shop wall and peoples feet walking past her, this is a long shot and is again filmed over a long period of time and sped up for the effect of toms of people going past over a short period of time , the angle of the shot then changes as the camera is move at a 90 degree angle to the women, allowing us to see a side view and a partial front view and people walking towards and away from her, again this is sped up, and is used to capture the reaction on the women’s face.
The camera then changes to a close up of the women’s face as she looks upset and depressed closing her eyes with no emotion on her face, it then changes to another close up of her face as she is begging to cry and is biting her hand when it is in her hoodie sleeve, she looks very emotional and very upset.
It the swaps to the women looking in a mirror, and is over the shoulder high shot to make her look stronger, she is looking at how she looks in a dress, she then begins to do her hair up and the camera then changes to a close up of her wiping the eyeliner away and looking tidier as she begins to put more on , it then swaps to a close-up of her applying lipstick very slowly and puckering her lips.
The camera and location the swap to outside, which looks to be a car park with a car coming towards her with his headlamps on, this angle of the camera swaps to a close up of the women’s face, using the lights from the car coming towards her to see her face, better, she looks very sick and scared, she begins to walk, and the camera changes back to behind her and her walking to the car window. , she slowly takes her coat off, to show revealing clothing.
The camera then changes to a shot thought the window of the car showing she is a prostitute, she looks slightly more confident, and talks to the driver, once again never seeing the other persons face. The camera then stays in the same place and she begins to open the car and get it, just as she’s getting in, the camera angle changes to a long shot of her getting in the car, but from a front/side view now.
The camera then swaps to a back view of the car, with the car itself driving off the camera quickly swaps back to the front and the car drives out of frame, as it is in black and white the whole car park seen looks very murky, which is the way it is represented in modern life.
The camera then swaps to a long shot with the women and man who picked her up walking down a long corridor, looks like some type of hotel, the women is a good few meters behind the mad and they are walking away from the camera.
The camera then swaps to a midshot of the girl walking through a door and a bed being there, we see this as if the camera is already in the room and she is just walking into it, the camera then changes to a close up of the women and the man wrapping his time around her neck and the women pulling him close to her.
Once again the camera changes this time to a close-up of the man’s shirt as the women’s hands are all over him, as she reaches down to his shirt pocket to get some money from it, she then begins to open the shirt. It then swaps to a close up of the women lying in bed with her tights on; the camera starts at her feet and moves up the leg showing the man, touching her legs.
The camera swaps again to a close-up of the women’s face, this time from a side view lying in bed, so we can also see a blurred mans face. The women then tilt her head left, towards the camera and begin crying.
A close up of her hands are then show, at a new location, swapping some money, for a bag of drugs, the lyrics playing are “go mad for a couple of grams” which fit in perfectly to the song. The shot then becomes a mid shot of the women, walking towards a door and the camera follows her as a person would. She opens a door and walks through it. The shot then becomes a close up of the women slowly lifting the drugs to her eyes and staring at them smiling, it turns to another close up at a slightly different angle as she takes her close up. The camera then changes to a montage of close ups from the women’s face and lighting a candle and putting the drugs over them. Then ending on a close up of her face. However, she is smoking the drugs from a tube with a light underneath.
The video then ends with the women, looking high and falling onto something black, this is I think a bed, as she falls she has her eyes open, but slowly they close and she lies still and then a sunset going over some houses with a ghost like image of the women wearing a hoodie talking to someone (don’t see them again) but smiling at the end.
Overall, this video is exceptionally well made to say the artist does not have a record company and there for did not have a massive budget, the collaboration of shots used add amazing effects and the black and white effect used though the whole of the movie really does make it. The song lyrics match perfectly with what the music video is about and as it shows the artist, it also advertises him, but he is more concerned about having a story told in the music video. I would defiantly use some effects and shots that have been used in this video as it is extremely well made.
